What Would You Do

Today I was at the grocery store and came down an aisle to find an employee getting chewed out by a customer. I came in at the very end so I'm not sure what the situation was. It did seem like the employee was trying to fix whatever the situation was and he remained calm and composed. The man seemed completely unreasonable and was swearing at the employee and calling him obscene and racists names. I couldn't believe it was happening.

What was surprising to me was the amount of people just standing around watching. One guy at my end of the aisle was actually just laughing at what was going on. There was also a couple standing right next to the customer and the employee and didn't say anything. There were also people standing nearby just watching it all play out. By the time I got to the end of the aisle the man was starting to storm off. Had the man not been a foot taller and over a 100 pounds more than me I would have said something. He was quite intimidating.

I did find a manager and told her what I saw. It was mainly to give kudos to the employee for remaining so calm, I'm not sure what I would have done in that situation. I didn't see the man again, so I'm not sure what happened to him. I really hope a manager talked to him or there was some consequence. I don't care what the situation was about, no one deserves to be treated like that man treated that employee. Especially with the racists comments. It was unbelievable.

What would you have done in that situation? I would like to think that had I come onto it sooner and before it escalated to the point that it did I would have said something to the man.

I'm not sure that I would have felt comfortable saying something to the man directly, but I definitely would have tried to flag down a manager or someone else who could diffuse the situation...I understand getting frustrated and even sometimes getting loud as a customer, but racist comments are WAY out of line.

    Good for you for talking to someone after...I think it's so important to give kudos as well as complaints!

  2. I have been in this exact situation at the post office. I am there every day mailing stuff for work, so I know every employee there very well. This person was pissed cause they didn't get their mail on time or something, and it had nothing to do with the person in front of them. They were getting totally nasty and saying obsene things too and cursing, which is completely unnecessary and I told them so. I said loudly in front of the whole place "You need to watch your mouth, there are children here, and this employee here had nothing to do with the situation so you need to calm down." He glared at me but stopped cursing and toned it down a tad. The postal worker said thanks but they get treated like that all the time. Sad.

  3. I'm with Mer-I would find a manager to calm it down. I don't understand some people!?!

  4. Wow, I'd like to say that I would have said something to the man, but I'm not sure I would have considering his demeanor. I definitely would have flagged down a manager. I think you did what you could. Hopefully that employee no longer works there after that. How awful!
