OMT Update

So it's been awhile since I mentioned my Old Man Toe around here. It's been ok, still a little painful, I still can't wear heels, but considering I spend most of my days on the couch I haven't had a lot of trouble with it. When I was at the conference this past weekend I was on my feet quite a bit. We even had a formal dinner where tennis shoes just wouldn't be kosher. I wore heels from my room to the ballroom downstairs at the hotel and was in pain. All other times I was in tennis shoes. I got quite a bit of looks as I walked around in a business suit with tennis shoes on. At the end of the week, my toe HURT.

I called the Dr. yesterday to schedule an appointment to get another cortisone shot. OMG, that thing sucked even more than it did the first time and my toe is currently throbbing. He took a new set of X-Rays, did some other tests and watched me walk up and down a hallway to try to figure out what's wrong with it. What he's determined is that my toe bone (we're getting REAL TECHNICAL here) is jamming against my foot bone when my toe bone is supposed to kind of glide over my foot bone. Basically my foot bone is a bit taller than it should be and my range of motion of my toe bone isn't what it should be. This is causing the pain in the joint and it's also starting to show signs of arthritis.

So my options are cortisone shots to manage the pain, but it's not a fix. I can get orthotics, but they're pricey, insurance doesn't cover them and they may not solve the problem - they could actually make it worse. There's no a guarantee that they will do what the Dr. hopes they will do. The third choice is surgery. They'll go in and reshape the bones so that I get the movement that I need. I think it's outpatient and only a 3 day before you can go back to work type of thing. I'm pretty sure I'll have to wear a stylish boat for awhile too.

So there's my toe update. Fun stuff all around!

  1. I hope you get to feeling better...I can't imagine how much it hurts, I'm a baby when it comes to an ingrown toenail! Get well!
