Ten On Tuesday

I decided to do Chelsea's Ten on Tuesday today. If you don't follow her over on Roots and Rings you should, because she's hilarious, she's a Texan, and she also loves the Pioneer Woman. She's also having a super awesome giveaway for her blogoversary. You could be the proud owner of a cute Susie Homemaker style apron if you win. You know you want to enter so get on over there!

1. Are there any movies that inspire you to bake/cook?

Not that I can think of. I did see Julie and Julia, but it overwhelmed me. I do simple recipes, not complicated. Although it really made me want to be the proud owner of a beautiful dutch oven. I'm more inspired by reading a delicious sounding recipe online than anything.

2. What’s your favorite food blog and why?

The Pioneer Woman Cooks of course. I also love her Tasty Kitchen site too.

Smitten Kitchen. I can't actually read her site because just looking at the pictures of things that she makes causes me to gain 50 pounds.

Annie's Eats. Yum.

3. Who’s your favorite celebrity chef?

I don't have one. I don't even watch the Food Network. I couldn't tell you who have of them are. The closest I get is Man vs Food and it's on the Travel Channel.

4. What’s your favorite kitchen tool?

After forever saying "I don't need a KitchenAid" I'm kicking myself for not getting one sooner. I love that thing. A sharp knife is always handy as well.

5. When it comes to cooking/baking, what’s your specialty?

Chocolate Chip cookies are what I love to make. I have a weakness for good chocolate chip cookies. I don't think I make anything that's absolutely mind blowing, but don't think I make anything that's absolutely terrible either. Oh, I do make a mean apple cake.

6. When in the kitchen, do you wear an apron, if so, any cute ones you’d like to share?

Yes. I have no pictures of them though. I only wear them when I have to make something and people are about to be over and I don't want to get dirty or when I'm doing a marathon cooking session in the kitchen. Otherwise they stay hanging on the pantry door.

7. Is there anything that intimidates you when it comes to baking/cooking? (ex. Pie crust, yeast breads, sauces, etc…)

Gravy. I finally made awesome gravy this Thanksgiving. It's taken me a long time to get it right, but I'm still terrified every time I make it.

8. What’s the weirdest gadget in your kitchen?

I don't know? My husband the taste tester? The dogs that lick up everything I drop? None of them are really gadgets. I do own an apple peeler, corer, slicer. I haven't quite figured out how to properly use it, but it's come in handy quite a bit. John came with a fondue pot which I always found strange.

9. What’s your go-to music for cooking/baking?

Actually I like to have the TV on.

10. After several failures, what do you do to motivate yourself to get back in the kitchen to try again?

I hardly ever fail. It took me 7 years to make something my husband just plain wouldn't eat. It wasn't bad, he just didn't like it. I've had few failures, but usually just try again until I get it right.

  1. I LOVE Man vs. Food. He's awesome.

Our #4's are the same. There is no substitution for a good, sharp knife.

Do you have a killer choc. chip recipe?? Share it!

  2. I read Chelsea's blog too but I don't have much cooking going on in my kitchen...so sad!

  3. I can't remember if you already shared what it was that John just wouldn't eat. I think you did, but remind me!

I really miss having a TV in the kitchen!

  4. 2) Have you actually tried to make Smitten's recipes? The few I did turned out badly, but I'm not sure if it's just me or if I just don't have the same taste.

    3) Man vs. Food has made me desperately want to try those wings that made him cry. I love hot food, and it's never hot enough.

    5) Do you have any tricks for good chocolate chip cookies? I made some for Christmas and they were really spongy and not tasty. I'm possibly the worst baker on earth.

  5. Meredith - it was a cold avocado soup. Here's the post: http://theadventuresoffaith.blogspot.com/2009/09/recipe-catch-up-part-5.html

I don't have a TV in the kitchen (it'd be cool though), but we do have a window thingy that lets me look into the living room at the TV. Sometimes I swivel the TV so I can see it better and it drives John bonkers.

Talklesssaymore - Hi! I'll get you my fave chocolate chip cookie recipe. It's actually from Smitten Kitchen.

  6. My family has always made gravy from a package, in fact, I've never known it any other way! It intrigues me now that gravy scares you!

  7. Angela - I'd comment back to you, but your blog is private. We did not do package gravy at my house. Gravy is made from scratch. Yeah, package gravy is pretty fool proof and tastes good, but nothing beats gravy made from pan drippings with little bits of fried stuff left behind. So good!
